Soziale Medien und Smartphones im Alltag

What's it about?

Lecture by Dr. Kathrin Karsay, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Journalism and Communication Science, University of Vienna. The lecture explores the opportunities and challenges of constant digital availability and discusses how 'digital well-being' can be achieved. Social media and smartphones have become constant companions and are a fixed part of many people's daily lives. At the same time, a societal shift in attitude is emerging, which can be called post-digital skepticism: after years of euphoria, the fascination with digital media has diminished, at least among parts of the population, and the negative aspects are increasingly coming into focus. The lecture provides insights into current research findings on the effects of digital media on our mental health. It also addresses current political developments, such as the proposed social media age limit. The focus is on how to achieve a healthy and conscious Umgang (approach) with digital media and what contributes to more 'digital well-being.' The event is sponsored by the Austrian Society for Political Education. Moderation by Mag.a Elisabeth Ohnemus. Registration by 18.11.2026.
