Activity Weekend: Food Culture Through Time From the Old Stone Age to the Middle Ages

Was nutrition in the Stone Age really as simple as often assumed, or was it astonishingly diverse? What foods were actually on our ancestors' menu? Did they drink only water, or were there already early forms of fermented beverages like beer or wine? And how were meals prepared, seasoned, and eaten together? These and many other exciting questions about the development of human nutrition will be vividly answered during the activity weekend at MAMUZ Schloss Asparn/Zaya. With the help of archaeological methods, the eating habits of early societies can now be reconstructed with astonishing accuracy. Traditional depictions, paintings, and early writings also provide insights into the rules, rituals, and social aspects of communal eating. This weekend focuses on the nutrition and food culture of our ancestors. In the archaeological open-air area of MAMUZ Schloss Asparn/Zaya, typical dishes such as Ritschert, sweet grain porridge, and prehistoric flatbread will be prepared according to historical traditions and then tasted together. Visitors can knead, bake, and, of course, try the flatbread themselves. In addition, herbalism imparts exciting knowledge about various medicinal and culinary herbs, their significance in the past, and their versatile use in the kitchen and in everyday life. Special guided tours through the exhibition (at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM) offer in-depth insights into the development of food culture from the Old Stone Age to the Middle Ages and show how ingredients, preparation, and eating habits have changed over the millennia.
