Lu means body, Jong means training/transformation. This all-encompassing Tibetan movement practice from the Vajrayana tradition originated about eight thousand years ago. The exercises, originally transmitted orally, helped the reclusive monks stay mentally and physically healthy or become so. Observations of nature, knowledge of the five elements (water, earth, fire, wind, space), and the interplay of mind and breath were incorporated into the exercises. Lu Jong is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The exercises mainly focus on the movement of the spine, the subtle channels, and the harmony of the inner wind ('lung'). In Tibetan medicine, all diseases are categorized into gall, wind, and phlegm illnesses. The three principles or energies (gall, wind, phlegm) form juices, contain the five elements, and constitute a sensitive system that connects the gross (physical) level with the subtle (mental) level. We become ill when the balance of the five elements and the harmony of the three juices are disturbed. Lu Jong 1 includes five groups of movements: - The Five Elements Movements - Movements of the five body parts - Movements for the five vital organs - Movements for the six states - Two exercises for insomnia and fatigue
