What's it about?
Five young independent photographers on life in contemporary RussiaCurator: Polina Rukavichkina (BLR/RU) Artists: Ilya Nikitin (UKR/RUS), Polina Rukavichkina (BLR/RUS), Katya Selezneva (RUS/GEO), Katya Yanova (RUS), Haru Li Wdo (RUS/D) This exhibition brings together five photography projects that explore how the lives of individuals are shaped, burdened, and sometimes redefined under the influence of collective systems – be they political, religious, historical, or linguistic. The works are rooted in specific contexts of contemporary Russia, yet through their engagement with memory, care, identity, and the ethics of viewing, they extend far beyond these. A central theme of the exhibition is the question of the gaze – not only what is seen, but also from where and how. Each artist takes a different position: from intimate proximity to observational distance, from archival reconstruction to self-reflective projection. The projects encompass documentary, staged, and autobiographical forms, reflecting different approaches to what it means to see and be seen under pressure. Polina Rukavichkina
