What's it about?
On the occasion of their joint eleventh anniversary, Paul Schuberth and Tomáš Novák are releasing a new album—and remain true to their equally idiosyncratic and unmistakable blend of jazz, new music, folk music, and imaginary folk music. Fransenüberblick (Fringe Overview) gathers much of what the accordion-violin duo has developed over the past years: original compositions, reimagined standards, traditional pieces in new guise, and pseudo-traditional works in old style, chansons, and set texts—including works by Jura Soyfer. The album title not only refers to a piece by Paul Schuberth but also to the musical principle of the duo: various musical fringes come together to form a surprisingly coherent whole. Whether this results in a quirky patchwork or a finely crafted ear protector is up to the audience. Paul Schuberth, a classically trained accordionist, moves between contemporary music, improvisation, and political writing. Tomáš Novák is a violinist, singer, and stylistic boundary-crosser between jazz, classical, folk, klezmer, and chanson. Tomáš Novák - violin, Paul Schuberth - accordion.
