Nafas
What's it about?
With Nafas (German for 'Breath'), six musicians who have been shaping the Vienna music scene for years and are also at home on international stages come together. Nataša Mirković, Basma Jabr, Sakina Teyna, and Golnar Shahyar connect stories, memories, and experiences from different cultural spaces through their voices, layered and carried by great poetic presence. As composers, producers, singers, and artistic boundary-crossers, they draw from musical traditions of the Middle East, the Balkans, and Central Asia, without ever limiting themselves to origin or genre. Together with Mahan Mirarab on guitar and Amir Wahba on percussion, they create an open sound space that combines improvisation, rhythm, and narrative depth. Between contemporary sound language, traditional influences, and spontaneous musical encounters, a music unfolds that understands movement as a principle — free, permeable, and full of mutual attention. The six musicians first met in this formation in 2018 and have since come together repeatedly in different projects. Nataša Mirković moves effortlessly as a vocal artist between baroque, folk music, jazz, and improvisation, and is one of the most distinctive voices of European contemporary music. Syrian singer Basma Jabr combines traditional Arabic music with jazz and contemporary influences into an independent musical language. Sakina Teyna draws from the rich tradition of Kurdish storytelling and singing culture and combines it with contemporary musical expressions. Golnar Shahyar is one of the defining voices of the European contemporary and improvised music scene. Iranian guitarist and composer Mahan Mirarab blends Iranian musical traditions with jazz, chamber music, and improvisation on his fretless guitar. Amir Wahba combines influences from North African, Brazilian, and Cuban music with jazz and contemporary improvisation.
