What's it about?
Four people, two duos, once across the Atlantic – and somewhere in between: Scotland, Canada, Kansas, a few very good songs and world-class step dancing. Paul McKenna & Robbie Greig (SCOT) An old acquaintance of Scottish Colours returns with Paul McKenna. His distinctive voice, his direct lyrics and his pleasantly calm stage presence have long earned him a loyal fan base. A lot has happened since his first WELTENKLANG tour in 2009: “Scots Singer of the Year”, invitation to the Transatlantic Sessions, six albums – and still songs that find their place astonishingly relaxed between quiet melancholy, political undertones and grand gestures. He is accompanied by violinist Robbie Greig, who has already been heard with Tannara at Scottish Colours and gives the songs exactly the right amount of punch and subtlety. Paul McKenna - voice, Robbie Greig - violin April Verch & Cody Walters (CAN/USA) The second duo comes with a lot of movement: April Verch & Cody Walters combine Canadian Roots, Old-Time, 50s Country and a pinch of Scandinavian and Scottish folk into something that sounds both traditional and very lively. April Verch is a fiddler, singer and step dancer – and not just incidentally, but at a world champion level in Ottawa Valley Stepdance. In addition, there are now over 15 albums, tours around the globe and an audible joy in simply throwing folk and country together and seeing what happens. By her side: multi-instrumentalist Cody Walters from Kansas, deeply rooted in Old-Time and Bluegrass, responsible for groove, strings of all kinds and the solid foundation under the flying fiddle lines. Scottish Colours number 19 thus brings two duos who do the same thing in very different ways: take tradition seriously, but not too seriously – and above all play good songs.
