What's it about?
Maria Mazzotta is one of the most impressive voices on the European world music scene. With great intensity and emotional depth, she moves between Southern Italian musical tradition, Balkan grooves and contemporary sound language. At the centre of her programme is the album Amoreamaro – a multi-layered musical exploration of the different facets of love: tender and comforting, possessive and painful, healing and destructive at the same time. Traditional songs from Southern Italy meet new arrangements, poetic lyrics and rhythmic forms such as the Pizzica, whose repetitive power was once considered music of healing. Maria Mazzotta combines musical research with great artistic openness and develops an expression that is deeply rooted in regional traditions and yet points far beyond them. Since the release of Amoreamaro, Maria Mazzotta has performed on renowned stages and festivals throughout Europe and beyond – from Paris to Bogotá, from WOMEX to the ORF Kulturhaus Wien.
