What's it about?

The extensive work of writer Margarete Beutler (1876 to 1949) was long considered a lost and unrecognized treasure. Thirty-five years after her death, her grandson Martin Freksa finds two large, dusty boxes in the attic—just before selling his parents' house. It quickly becomes clear that these contain his grandmother's estate, which was saved from the trash dump only just in time and which the grandson is now gradually publishing anew. In addition to her published collections of poetry, texts, and translations, over 200 poems, more than 50 stories, seven plays, an opera libretto, and an extensive novel fragment are discovered—texts that tell of her varied life as an artist, her 'little protected, little loved' childhood, the exciting bohemian era between artist cafés and cabaret stages in Berlin and Munich, and her self-determined life in the countryside. She is a ruthless observer of existential poverty and (women's) destinies in the big city, an advocate of 'free motherhood' and equal partnership, and passionately uncompromising in her desire for freedom, her connection to nature, her sensuality, and her wish for alternative life models. Stefanie Elias weaves Margarete Beutler's poems and autobiographical texts into a monodrama that traces the artist's varied and exciting life, atmospherically intensified by Oliver Steger's compositions.
