What's it about?

"Romeo and Juliet" is arguably the most famous love story in the world. Not without reason, William Shakespeare's tragedy is considered a benchmark for countless love stories. Two young people from traditionally feuding families meet — the reason for the hatred between the two parties is no longer known. They seek refuge in love and discover it at first sight for each other. But their unconditional devotion is forbidden from the start. In his adaptation, Swiss author Lucien Haug remains in Shakespeare's verse and creates a contemporary version of a young, naive, and exuberant love in a world distorted by hostility and hatred. The two lovers, Romeo and Juliet, prove that boundless love ignites despite and because of its impossibility. The romantic concept of love becomes a bomb against the hardened hostility of the parental generation, to the extent that it is even worth dying for the young lovers. Director Stefan Pucher, who has been invited multiple times to the Berlin Theatertreffen, is known among other things for his sensuous and playful Shakespeare productions. For the Theater in Josefstadt, he is presenting "Romeo and Juliet" for the first time, bringing Shakespeare's radical ideal of love, which the two young people live, to the stage. Premiere on October 1, 2026, at 7:30 PM.
