Komödie der Verführung
What's it about?
Vienna, summer 1914. Europe is on the brink of disaster, yet the upper society continues to gather for celebrations. Prince of Perosa hosts a masked ball. At its center dance three confident women: the highly sought-after Countess Aurelie begins an affair with the daring Max von Reisenberg, which is doomed from the start. He is also courting the beautiful singer Judith, who is in love with her sister's husband. Nevertheless, Judith agrees to be with Max, setting clear conditions — one night of love, no more. Seraphine, an aspiring violinist, also has a romance with Max. But when she expects a child from him, she decides to raise the child alone and rejects him. The title's seduction is more than a fleeting erotic game. It concerns freedom and responsibility, deception and self-deception, and the question of what consequences one is willing to bear. What begins as a seemingly lighthearted game, where the characters stage their lives as fairy tales, reveals itself as a dance on a volcano in the face of the approaching war. In the production by Hungarian director Ildikó Gáspár, musical pieces from the operetta repertoire will play a special role. She explores the escapist operetta bliss of a society under whose glittering surface the cracks of an entire era emerge — a society on the verge of moral and historical collapse. Schnitzler's rarely performed piece, in which hunger for life and boredom, humor and despair coexist, depicts a picture that seems frighteningly relevant today. Premiere on September 3, 2026, at 7:30 PM.
