From the English by Heiner Müller The time is out of joint, oh cursed spite That ever I was born to set it right! When Prince Hamlet returns home to Denmark, nothing is as it used to be. His father, the king, is dead. His mother is freshly married to her deceased husband's brother. The latter conducts state affairs, deciding on the future of the country and its people. When one night the ghost of his dead father appears to young Hamlet, accusing his own brother of poisoning and urging Hamlet to seek revenge, his world is completely thrown out of balance. In the struggle to restore order and justice, Hamlet steadfastly fights against a system of corruption, lies, and falsehood. Is his mother still on his side? – or is she even entangled in the murder plot? Does Ophelia love him or is she spying on him? Who can still be trusted here? Hamlet doubts everything and everyone and despairs more and more of himself. "It's about a rift between two eras. And in this rift, Hamlet perishes." Heiner Müller, 1990
