What's it about?
We meet two friends who go on a trip together. They cycle to a lake where a raft is moored. The raft is a piano. The friends board and begin to explore both the raft itself and the surroundings. Many strange creatures live on the shore. They feel the urge to explore the depths of the water as well. They untie the ropes and row out into the unknown. A homage to the wonders of nature: the composition explores the diversity of nature in its colors, shapes, movements, and sounds, both above and below the water surface. It investigates how sound, animation, and performance interact — without words and without a clear narrative. The performance appeals to many of our senses and emphasizes the audience's capacity for personal reflection. A multifaceted performance full of spectacular visual expressions, created by Elizabeth Hobbs, one of Europe's most important animation filmmakers, with music by the world-renowned composer Carola Bauckholt in collaboration with Jennifer Torrence and Ellen Ugelvik, the performers of the piece. AUSFLUG/UTFLUKT was developed as part of "Performing Precarity," a research project on music performance. The work was presented at ECLAT in Stuttgart and at the Ultima Contemporary Music Festival in Oslo.
