Four theater texts by Elfriede Jelinek from almost four decades, written between 1988 and 2025. THE ARRIVAL is a theater marathon at the right time – here, in the land of mountains, land on the river. And now, as the last firewalls in Europe are also beginning to crumble. 1945, the last days of the war: A lavish party is celebrated at Rechnitz Castle in Burgenland. As a highlight, guests shoot about 200 Jewish forced laborers. In the 2000s, a right-wing extremist terror cell murders its way through Germany unmolested. In both cases, the legal processing is slow, witnesses remain silent, evidence disappears. And today? The political center falls silent, the rightward shift is in full swing, völkisch and radical thinking become socially acceptable again – and frightening continuities become increasingly recognizable. Elfriede Jelinek distills both contemporary history and the immediate present into great literature. RECHNITZ (THE ANGEL OF DESTRUCTION) is her central work on Nazi crimes and their legacy, in THE SILENT GIRL she deals with the murders of the NSU and the subsequent court cases. And in THE FAREWELL – NO: THE ARRIVAL she escalates the triumphantly clumsy rhetoric of right-wing agitators into a breathless hymn of fantasies of power and fascist nature poetry. Jan Philipp Gloger, who has been dealing with the work of Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek for many years in productions, including premieres and first performances, assembles four of her plays into a large edifice of repression and return. An evening about the traditions of nationalist thinking and right-wing violence through the centuries – and an evening that traces the madness and laments forgetting and silencing. Jelinek's early work CLOUDS.HOME serves as a prologue. Here, Hölderlin, Hegel and other classics already speak in the chorus of national pathos – thus preparing the ground for the future.
