What's it about?

Romantic opera in three acts with libretto by Richard Wagner. A dark curse hangs over him: only once every seven years may the 'Flying Dutchman'—a notorious sailor—land and try to find a woman who will redeem him through her fidelity. Otherwise, he is doomed to wander the world's seas. Senta, the daughter of Captain Daland, knows of the Dutchman's fate and feels called to redeem him with her love. But can her obsession with this phantom also be proven in reality? Richard Wagner depicts in his 1901 opera, which was included in the canon of 'Bayreuth-worthy' works, a person despairing of life and society. Composed in Paris in 1841, the work was first performed two years later in Dresden. Director Philipp Stölzl questions the portrayal of women in this production and follows the plot consistently from Senta's perspective—who is 'sold' by her father and is to be extinguished for another man. In German with German and English surtitles. 30-minute introduction to the work before each performance. Co-production with Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin. Original production of Theater Basel.
