It was built at the behest of Emperor Karl VI starting in 1716 after the last major plague epidemic and completed in 1737. In 1741, Antonio Vivaldi was buried directly at the Karlskirche. Until 1918, it was an imperial patronal church. Today, you can experience authentic concerts in the Karlskirche with the Orchester 1756 and its soloists playing on original instruments.
