Three people stand in a circle and do not move. In the cold light of the spotlights, only their silhouettes are visible. The audience waits. A murmur is heard, then a shout: Behind us, the ruins of Europe! A high, shrill scream and the performers disappear into the darkness. The LESSINGTHEATER-WIEN has been working for years with participatory-performative methods to develop theater texts for the stage. The performance of 'Hamletmaschine' builds on the understanding of theater as a space for societal negotiation. Heiner Müller's piece tells of the failure of 20th-century utopias and the consequences this disillusionment has on our society. The ensemble of LESSINGTHEATER-WIEN performs Heiner Müller's 'Hamletmaschine'. The text, the concerns of the characters on stage, the location, and the theme are combined in the production. The staging is developed, among others, by ensemble members who have experienced social crises of the 21st century firsthand, such as war, poverty, and flight.
