"When it's performed in Vienna, it will surely be the biggest theater scandal of the Second Republic!" When Elfriede Jelinek announced her then youngest play in 1981, a "wicked farce with singing," not even she anticipated that BURGTHEATER would establish her reputation as a "nest-destroyer" even without the originally planned premiere at the Burgtheater. A famous acting family, rumbles and whispers in deadly artistic language: for Swiss director and Wiener Festwochen artistic director Milo Rau, who has now been granted exclusive rights for a late Burgtheater premiere by Jelinek, these will be just some of the starting points for a larger scenic panorama: publicity and conformity, history (of the BURG, of theater, and Europe), fascism and repression.
