Ernst Pepping: Songbook based on poems by Paul Gerhardt Johanna Müller-Hermann: Selected songs Xenia Preisenberger, vocals Martin Kaleschke, piano Lutheran City Church Dorotheergasse 18, 1010 Vienna Starts at 7:30 PM The anniversary year of Paul Gerhardt (350th death anniversary) serves as the starting point for an unusual musical encounter. At the turn of 1945/46: Europe lies in ruins. Ernst Pepping reflects on the horrors of World War II and composes twelve large-scale songs for voice and piano based on famous chorale texts by Paul Gerhardt. Pepping (1901–1981) created expressive works in his Paul Gerhardt Songbook, which oscillate between modern and late Romantic sounds. His music stands in contrast to the songs of Viennese composer Johanna Müller-Hermann – a representative of musical modernism of her time who was unjustly rarely performed. She achieved success during her lifetime and was appointed in 1918 as a professor of music theory at the Neue Wiener Conservatory. In the church space, a tense dialogue emerges between Protestant church music and Viennese sound culture.
