SOPHIA or The End of the Humanists

SOPHIA or The End of the Humanists

Tuesday 15 September · 19:30Kammerspiele der Josefstadt · wien

What's it about?

We live in a world of the unconscious, so an artificial consciousness doesn't even stand out. The great scientist Wolfgang Bergmann feels the world slipping away from him. His students turn away from him, his university drops him, and as if that weren't bad enough, his wife also leaves him. But then SOPHIA enters his life and happiness seems to favor him again. She is clever, fast, infinitely patient, unconditionally devoted - just not entirely human. For his 60th birthday, Wolfgang gave himself a humanoid android. Suddenly, he is no longer out of time, but everyone else is. Life seems perfect again, but then his daughter's friend starts tampering with SOPHIA's system and she begins to reprogram herself. What starts as a harmless experiment increasingly gets out of control... In a cheerful way, Moritz Rinke poses perhaps the decisive question in his play: are humanoids only better humans as long as they don't become too similar to us? "When I first had the idea, I thought I was writing a science fiction comedy. But now that SOPHIA or The End of the Humanists is soon to be on stage, it has probably become more of a play about our present. Artificial intelligence is changing our lives at breathtaking speed. And it won't be long before we actually live with them - with machines that become so human-like that we no longer know where the boundaries lie." Moritz Rinke
