for children aged 3 to 10 and their accompanying adults In this two-day workshop, we leave the Künstlerhaus and go to the park, where we approach nature in an urban space and learn the traditional Chinese art technique of rubbing. Rubbing has a long history in China. Its origins can be traced back to the practice of incising texts and images into materials such as oracle bones, bronze, stone slabs, or wooden tablets, and then preserving and transmitting these traces with paper and ink. Together with art educator and artist, Sifan Pan, we will look at the forms of tree bark, leaves, branches, stones, and ground surfaces and perceive different textures. The workshop combines outdoor observations with artistic work indoors: Outdoors, we search for and document natural structures and forms using the rubbing technique; indoors, we further process the collected papers and create handcrafted objects from them that can be taken home. Through shared observation, touching, and creation, children and their accompanying adults discover that nature in the city is not a distant landscape, but full of details, forms, and stories. The workshop takes place in English, Chinese, and German. As part of the wienXtra kinderaktiv program.
