Following the overwhelming success of ROCK ME AMADEUS – THE FALCO MUSICAL, the Vienna State Theatres, a company of Wien Holding, will present another highlight in the upcoming season: Musical director Christian Struppeck and his creative team will bring with MARIA THERESIA – THE MUSICAL, a brand new VBW production, to the stage of the Ronacher in October 2025. This epic work tells the fascinating story and legacy of one of the most influential monarchs of the 18th century – a vivid portrait of power, passion, and historical change. Epic drama: powerful music and an exciting story The opulent musical combines monumental drama with modern sound, pulsating beats with compelling lyrics. Timeless history meets contemporary staging, creating an engaging stage experience full of energy and surprises. With this spectacular production, the Vienna State Theatres make a strong statement and pay tribute to the legendary ruler – young, dynamic, and unmistakably unique. Intrigue, wars, power struggles: the first female ruler of the Habsburg monarchy In a male-dominated world, a young woman rises who is not willing to stay in the shadows. Maria Theresia, who from childhood was passionately interested in political affairs and was ahead of her time in many ways, defies the patriarchal imperial house and demonstrates impressive strength and great visions. She fights against all resistance and eventually becomes the first woman to lead the state. With unwavering courage, she guides the country through turbulent times. Ruler, strategist, mother As the mother of sixteen children, Maria Theresia combines family care with political acumen and strategic foresight. First-class international creative team For the world premiere of MARIA THERESIA – THE MUSICAL, VBW has assembled an excellent creative team: The music is composed by the legendary composer and music producer Dieter Falk (MOSES - THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, BETHLEHEM, LUTHER, among others, multiple ECHO award winner, 50 platinum and gold records), who is also responsible for orchestration and arrangements, together with his son, renowned music producer and composer Paul Falk (works for Helene Fischer, DJ Ötzi, Michelle, Howard Carpendale). The lyrics are by lyricist Jonathan Zelter (works for Michelle, Tim Peters, Roland Kaiser, Peggy March – multiple top-ten chart placements, gold and platinum awards). The book is by Austrian author Thomas Kahry (SPATZ UND ENGEL (Burgtheater + international), HOUDINI, AUGUSTIN, HOLLYWOOD IN VIENNA, RAIMUND-THEATER-GALA, among others). The creative development is led by VBW musical director Christian Struppeck (I WAS NEVER IN NEW YORK, THE VISIT, I AM FROM AUSTRIA, ROCK ME AMADEUS – THE FALCO MUSICAL, among others). The direction is by the well-known musical specialist Alex Balga (JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, MESSIAH ROCKS, RAIMUND-THEATER-GALA, MIAMI NIGHTS, WE WILL ROCK YOU, DIRTY DANCING, ROCK).
