History of the Pilgrimage Church In the vicinity of Salzburg, the Pilgrimage Church of St. Leonhard is certainly one of the architecturally and culturally interesting buildings. The church was first mentioned in documents in 1407, but its founding dates back to the early 13th century. Originally, it was dedicated to St. George, later St. Leonhard was added. Due to his great veneration, the pilgrimage flourished strongly in the 18th century and the church was richly endowed – many votive offerings commemorate this. In 1816, the small village and the church of St. Leonhard became part of Salzburg or Austria (previously part of Berchtesgaden) and has belonged to the Erzabtei St. Peter since that time. Architecture and furnishings The striking location of the church on a rock between Königsseeache and Untersberg is notable. A tall red tower with a baroque onion dome is attached to the nave. Inside, the large high altar and the two side altars made of Untersberger and Adneter marble can be admired, featuring particularly high-quality paintings. The pulpit, created in the Berchtesgadener style in blue and gold in 1695, is one of the most valuable furnishings and, with its figures by Josef Stangassinger, is a cultural asset of first rank. Special features Art treasures: During Christmas time, two very famous cribs can be admired. The so-called Ölbergkrippe with wax figures from 1890 and the Xandl Schläffer crib, which is among the most beautiful in the Salzburg region. The baroque "St. Leonharder Kindl" is also visible in the church at this time. Advent market: The St. Leonhard Advent Market is not only the oldest in Salzburg but also the most traditional. During the Advent weekends, many regional products and crafts are available. The market is purely charitable and benefits people with disabilities. Leonhardiritt: On the Sunday around November 6th, the annual Leonhardiritt takes place. An impressive pilgrimage procession travels from Marktschellenberg with numerous carriages and riders to St. Leonhard, Grödig. After the church service, the famous Kranzlstechen (wreath-stabbing) takes place.
