Name: Volksgarten Description: FloraWith a wide range of species, the new Volksgarten is set up to be as resilient as possible for future challenges (e.g., heat, drought, diseases, pests). Both native and non-native (but not invasive!) plants are used. A large portion of the trees are listed by nurseries as so-called future trees.The two avenues are each lined with distinctive tree species. In the Volksgartenallee, these are the Red Horse Chestnut, the Trumpet Tree, the Ornamental Cherry, and the Pagoda Tree. The Tiergartenallee is characterized by the Hackberry, the Silver Linden, and the Elm. Furthermore, the area also features the Plane Tree, the Austrian Black Pine, the Himalayan Pine, and the Red Maple.The shrubs are arranged in groups according to various design themes (white blossom, red aspects, feather-light, winter color, bird and insect friends, bee friends). Examples of species deliberately planted as individual shrubs include the Shrubby Horse Chestnut, the Japanese Snowball Viburnum, the Witch Hazel “Arnold Promise,” and the Red and Yellow Smoke Bush.FaunaIn the peripheral areas (ecological zones), the spacious meadows, equipped with boulders and deadwood, provide food and habitat for various insect species, as well as for reptiles (e.g., lizards). The interplay of sunny to, in the future, rather shadier areas leads to the development of various microclimatically differentiated habitats.The water lily pond with its lushly planted natural pond area will be an interesting habitat for water-bound animal species (e.g., dragonflies). As a green space along the Traun, the Volksgarten can be an interesting hunting ground for birds, but also for bats. This would also be promoted by an increase in the insect population. The fence is deliberately designed to be permeable to small game, so small animals up to the size of hares can enter and exit unhindered. And the 2,000 square meter dog off-leash area offers generous opportunities for four-legged friends.MicroclimateThe demolition of the old exhibition halls also marked the end of the structural barrier between the city and the Traun river, which now serves as a fresh air corridor. Especially in summer, this can counteract the overheating of the city by allowing cool air to flow in from the surrounding area. This can now pass unhindered through the green spaces into the city.In addition, the new Volksgarten itself generates cool air with its generous lawns and meadows: namely, through the evaporation of plants and from the soil of the now unsealed areas. This is also favored by the newly created pond.Quality of LifeThe new Volksgarten can positively influence the quality of life in the city of Wels in many ways (details on the individual points will follow in a separate press conference):As a green and recreational area: Among other things, walking, sunbathing, resting, and playing on the lawn will be possible.As a sports area: With several sports and exercise stations, park visitors will be able to be active in various ways.As a play area: The two playgrounds, each approximately 2,600 square meters, will offer a generous and largely barrier-free experience and adventure space.As an experience area: Thanks to the installed infrastructure (water, electricity, sewage), events and festivals can also take place in the new Volksgarten.SponsorshipsUnder the motto “Become part of the new Volksgarten!”, a special opportunity opens up for citizens, companies, and communities to immortalize themselves permanently in this forward-looking urban development project. Through sponsorships, trees can be planted or benches donated – visible commitment to quality of life and sustainability in urban areas!Specific selected tree species are available for this: namely 16 Horse Chestnuts, as well as twelve each of Wild Cherries, Trumpet Trees, and Pagoda Trees. Each of the total of 52 sponsored trees will be provided with an individual plaque. In addition, a separate “Place of Tree Friends” will be created in the park, where all sponsorships will be displayed. This creates a beautiful and effective partner area for relaxation and recreation. The 58 sponsored park benches will also be provided with a high-quality plaque inscribed “dedicated by XXX.”Sponsorships can be acquired from 250 Euros per year.
