Villa Klusemann

Gmunden, Upper Austria

In 1873, the Klusemann couple had a classical-style villa built on the large grounds of Mühlwang Castle, on the corner plot of Kliemsteinstraße / Linzerstraße. In 1901, Duke Ernst August (II) of Cumberland acquired the villa and initially used it for residential purposes; after moving to Cumberland Castle, the property served as the administrative building of the Hanoverian Court. In March 1935, the villa became the seat of the battalion command of the newly established Gmunden garrison. During the Nazi era, the military district command was located in the villa. After the war, the American city command had its seat in this building. In 1958, the Hanoverians finally parted with the villa. It was sold to new owners. Villa Klusemann was converted into a hotel garni and leased to the Neues Leben missionary organization in 1976. In 1988, the municipality of Gmunden, with the support of the province of Upper Austria, bought Villa Klusemann. After appropriate adaptation work, the Provincial Music School has been housed in the building since 1992. The constantly increasing number of students and the demand to meet pedagogical developments required an expansion of the premises for Gmunden's music students. Therefore, a modern extension was built next to the villa. At Easter 2016, the music school moved into its new premises in the new extension. More information can be found at Gmundens Schätze!
