Photo: Tausendjährige LindeKirchham, Upper Austria
This is widely known as "Tausendjährige Linde" (Thousand-Year-Old Linden Tree). The province of Upper Austria officially declared it a natural monument due to its circumference and age. Linden trees often live to such an old age because they are very weather-resistant, but also because their wood is more often used by sculptors, turners, or carvers and not as construction timber. Most sacred figures are made from linden wood, which is why it is often referred to as "holy wood." The linden tree once provided shade for guests of the inn in the beer garden, but even earlier it had an important function. Between the tree and the guesthouse – which was formerly a customs station – stood an iron gate, which could only be passed after paying a toll. This gate gave the guesthouse and the village its name, and the linden tree serves as a reminder of it.
