Stadtpfarrkirche St. Andrä

Lienz, Tyrol

PARISH CHURCH ST. ANDRÄ Archaeological excavations have revealed that there was already a sacred building on this site in the 5th century – the presbytery bench with remains from the Roman period was uncovered from it. St. Andrä Church was first mentioned in a document in the 10th century. The construction was supported by the Patriarch of Aquileia, and three further extensions followed in the subsequent centuries. Wall paintings: The Expulsion from Paradise Inside, we find elements from various epochs. The oldest wall paintings date from the year 1300 and depict the Expulsion from Paradise. Furthermore, there are frescoes from the 13th – 14th century. The most recent depictions from the year 1761 show Saint Andrew as the intercessor of the city of Lienz and a cross-bearer. Also noteworthy is the organ from the year 1618, which was built by the Passau master Andreas Butz. 50% of the pipe inventory still dates from the time of its construction. The tomb monuments of the last Count of Görz, Leonhard von Görz, as well as of Michael von Wolkenstein and his wife Barbara von Thun, are historically significant. The only frescoes by the painter Albin Egger-Lienz The Warrior Memorial Chapel in the outdoor area of the parish church is not only a monument to the fallen, but – at his express wish – the final resting place of Albin Egger-Lienz. The frescoes inside the Warrior Memorial Chapel were the only ones he had ever painted. Opening hours: Daily from 07:00 to 20:00 The keys for the Warrior Memorial Chapel are to be picked up at the Kirchenwirt https://www.pfarre-st-andrae.at/kirchen/kapellen/kriegergedaechtniskapelle/
