Schlosspark Matzen

Our favorite spot: The Lion Pond with a view of Matzen Castle The castle is surrounded by a magnificent park, which is still privately owned. It was designed by order of Baron von Lipperheide based on an English model. The park includes two artificially created ponds: the Lion Pond and the Carp Pond with the so-called Nymphaeum, and many of the over 40 exotic trees and shrubs still date from the time the park was created. Strolling & Hiking Matzen Castle Park is ideal for walks followed by a stop at the Restaurant Gut Matzen with a view of the castle. Numerous hiking trails are also located around Matzen Park. Whether it's a family hike to the castle park or a castle circular hike – Matzen Castle is now operated as a hotel and, together with the castles and palaces in its surroundings, Lipperheide Castle, Lichtwehr Castle, and Kropfsberg Ruin, is always a worthwhile stop. Further hiking trails lead you from the castle park up to Reith im Alpbachtal.
