The necessary sports equipment was invented around 1960 by Josef Kaiser from Geislingen an der Steige, mainly for the purpose of being able to practice alpine skiing in summer. However, grass skiing never really caught on as summer training for alpine skiers, and so athletes began to specialize. In 1976, grass skiing received its own department within the German Ski Association, and starting from Germany, grass skiing became increasingly popular first in Central Europe, but in the early 80s also in Japan, China, and Australia. In 1985, grass skiing was integrated into the FIS. Taster Courses Grass Skiing for Everyone To introduce you to grass skiing, the Rettenbach Ski Center offers taster courses.
