Pfarrkirche zu Unserer Lieben Frau

A first church existed in Brixlegg as early as 788. However, neither its exact location can be determined, nor can the cause and time of its disappearance be reliably stated. The current church was built, probably under the direction of Jörg Steyrer, as a complete new construction on a previously fallow site. In 1520, the church was consecrated and placed under the patronage of Saint Joseph, although in official records since the first quarter of the 19th century, the Feast of the Marriage of the Virgin Mary is given as the day of the patron saint's festival. While the late Gothic appearance was largely preserved on the exterior, the interior underwent a complete redesign in Baroque forms in 1768. Anton Gigl was presumably responsible for the stucco work, and Christoph Anton Mayr for the ceiling paintings. The high altar depicts the marriage of Mary and Joseph in a representation by Kaspar Waldmann. The accompanying figures, created significantly later, are works by Franz Stitz’.
