Pfarrkirche Steinach

Like a mighty cathedral, the Neo-Romanesque parish church of St. Nothelfer Erasmus rises on the Brennerstrasse. The high altar and the three altarpieces are by the famous local son Martin Knoller. The church, first mentioned in 1337, was extended and baroque-style by Franz de Paula Penz in 1763. When a devastating fire struck the town in 1853, the church also fell victim to the flames. It is only thanks to the courage of the parish sacristan Anton Stockhammer and the Strickner brothers that the high altar and Knoller's three altarpieces were saved.
