Pfarrkirche Pöllau

Pöllau, Styria

In the heart of the historic market, culture enthusiasts can admire the Pöllau Parish Church with its magnificent Baroque frescoes and Pöllau Castle. Through the forebuildings completed in 1747, one enters the actual abbey precinct from the main square and stands in awe before one of the most important Baroque church buildings in Styria, the former collegiate church and now parish church of St. Veit in Pöllau. The current church building, with a length of 62 meters, the eighth largest church in Styria and at the same time one third the size of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, was built between 1701 and 1723 in several construction phases. The other dimensions of the church are also impressive: nave height 21.4 m, dome height 42 m, and tower height 53 m. 54 windows with over 400 m² of surface area allow for a lighting design in the interior that is of elemental importance for the spatial effect. Experience a guided tour through the church of the former Augustinian Canons' Monastery and the current Pöllau Parish Church, as well as the Baroque town center of Pöllau. Due to its size and floor plan, the Baroque church is often referred to as the "Styrian St. Peter's Basilica". After the church tour, reserve enough time to enjoy the delicacies of the region. The nearest SAM stop near the parish church is HF 5943 (Pöllau/Schlosszwinger), further stops can be found here.
