Pfarrkirche Anger

Anger, Styria

The parish church of St. Andreas in Anger was built between 1708 and 1711 by master builder Lorenz Stattaler from St. Ruprecht an der Raab. It is a four-bay wall-pillar church with side chapels and surrounding galleries above them, concluded by a mighty choir apse. The bell tower, however, is still of medieval origin and was completed in 1764 with a mighty dome. This oldest part of the church was built around 1161 as a Romanesque choir tower church and decorated with frescoes in the 14th century. The bell tower houses five bells, including the largest and oldest from 1713, cast by Florentin Streckfuß in Graz, followed by three steel bells from 1922, cast by Böhler in Kapfenberg, and finally a bronze bell from 1936, a work by the Graz foundry Szabo.Besides the large apostle paintings in the galleries, the magnificent organ case is particularly noteworthy. It was created around 1740 by the Graz organ builder Caspar Mitterreither. The current organ is a work by organ builder Georg Jann from 1983.
