Naturpark Rosalia-Kogelberg

The Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park is the youngest nature park in Burgenland and encompasses 13 municipalities. It is located on the eastern edge of the Vienna Basin and is home to the "Mattersburger Hügelland" bird sanctuary with a multitude of bird species. The landscape is characterized by the Ödenburg and Rosalia Mountains, the Wulka river in the valley, hedges and scattered fruit orchards, strawberry fields and wet meadows, vineyards and chestnut groves. Trees that like warmth thrive here, such as oaks, hornbeams, and the sweet chestnut. One of the most extensive dry landscapes in the area is the "Rohrbacher Kogel" nature reserve, where the Hungarian iris, dittany, flax species, the Siberian bellflower, the common pasque flower, and several orchid species grow. The Rohrbacher Teichwiesen (pond meadows) are considered an insider tip among ornithologists. In this nature and landscape protection area, located in front of the Kogelberg, protected and particularly rare species breed: marsh harrier, little bittern, spotted crake, and several heron species such as great egret, grey heron, night heron, and purple heron. Amphibians also feel at home in the mild waters. The nature park hosts the largest national breeding population of the extremely rare Eurasian scops owl in Austria. For breeding, it requires tree hollows but also uses nesting boxes. This nocturnal migratory bird overwinters in southern Europe and south of the Sahara. It feeds on larger insects and spiders, but also on earthworms, woodlice, small birds and mammals, and tree frogs. The Eurasian scops owl is a warmth-loving species that utilizes open, sometimes dry landscapes. In addition, numerous plant species are found in the nature park, such as the extremely delicious sweet chestnut. This beech plant is an old cultivated plant and is used culinarily both roasted and cooked. The sweet chestnut is a good bee pasture – sweet chestnut honey is a special delicacy among single-variety honey types.
