Naherholungsgebiet Pinka

Oberwart, Burgenland

To protect against flooding, the once shortened and straightened Pinka underwent renaturation, which was completed in 2017. Through extensive river meanders, the river was expanded to twelve hectares and returned to its original, near-natural state (fish, for example, can now swim upstream without barriers). In this project, flood protection, nature conservation, and local recreation area have been successfully linked. Mayor LAbg. Georg Rosner comments: "This project has brought many positive developments for Oberwart. Not only can we better protect the city and its citizens from flooding, but with the renaturation of the Pinka, an important step has also been taken in terms of environmental protection. The goal was to restore an ecologically functional riverbed. We see that this has been successful – and incidentally, a wonderful local recreation area for all Oberwart residents has also been created."Walk around the Pinka, sit by the river and enjoy nature - an absolute must for nature lovers!
