Kalser Stockmühlen

Kals a. Gr., Tyrol

ausstellungmuseumstour

Water-powered mills were widespread in East Tyrol until 50 years ago. Due to structural changes in agriculture, they largely lost their function and therefore gradually fell into disrepair. Thanks to the great commitment of the owners and contributions from the Hohe Tauern National Park, it has been possible to preserve six Stockmühlen (post mills) in Kals am Großglockner. The ingenuity brought the farmers the advantage of replacing the recurring work of the milling process with technically simple means using hydropower. Miller Johann will show you how the process from grain to flour works. And there is organically grown flour to take home. Demonstration shows are very popular, perhaps also because the environmentally friendly hydropower use of old times carries a touch of nostalgia. You can find the Stockmühlen from Kals/Großdorf along the forest path to Taurer. Further information at: www.kals-stockmuehlen.at
