Weiden am See, Burgenland

museumstour

In 2012, archaeological finds from the Early Bronze Age, the Roman Imperial Period, the Migration Period, the Early Middle Ages (Slavic-Avar settlement) and trench constructions from World War II were discovered on the southeastern outskirts of Weiden am See, near the B 10 cycle path. Particularly noteworthy are the wall foundations of a Villa rustica (Roman country estate) with underfloor heating and a bathhouse, as well as over 4000 archaeological objects and countless finds from several cultural epochs from the Neolithic Age to the 20th century. This makes the site in Weiden am See one of the largest and most productive contiguous sites of its kind in the entire Burgenland. The results of the excavations have been presented to the public since June 2015 by means of display boards at the Archaeological Info-Point on the lakebed.
