From Feldbach to Bad Gleichenberg A ride on the Gleichenberger Bahn offers much more than just a train journey from Feldbach to Bad Gleichenberg. Along the way, you immerse yourself in a true picture-book landscape, which you can experience, discover, and enjoy at leisure – thanks to the low travel speed of only around 40 km/h. Locals affectionately call the Gleichenberger Bahn the "Jungle Express." Not without reason, as its route alternates between meadows, forests, orchards, and vineyards. If you let your gaze wander further into the landscape, it falls upon the gentle hills and valleys of the Thermen- und Vulkanland Steiermark and the adjacent Slovenian mountains. Every now and then, you also catch a glimpse of the local wildlife – as deer, hares, and various birds are not uncommon here. Steeply Uphill with the Gleichenberger Bahn The Gleichenberger Bahn was opened on June 15, 1931, and is a single-track, electrified standard-gauge railway (1800 V DC). Along its 21 km route, it overcomes gradients of up to 42 per mille. This makes it not only steeper than the Semmeringbahn but also one of the steepest adhesion railways in the Alpine countries. The historic vehicles from the 1930s, when the Gleichenberger Bahn was built, are still in use. Railway Hiking and Cycling Trails A train ride is particularly popular when combined with a hike. The popular Gleichenberger Bahnwanderweg (railway hiking trail) largely follows the railway line. Afterwards, we recommend concluding with delicious regional specialties at a Buschenschank (wine tavern) around Bad Gleichenberg or Feldbach. The connection to numerous cycling paths such as the Kraftquellen-Tour, the Kernöl- or the Schwammerltour, as well as the Wein- und Kastanientour, is excellent. Bicycle transport on the train is possible. Experiences in Combination with the Train Journey A ride in the historic railcars combines nostalgic charm with exciting excursion destinations such as Styrassic Park or Curpark Bad Gleichenberg with the Generationenpark (motor skills park and playground). Or how about a stopover with a Buschenschank visit? If you are planning an unforgettable tour with your group, the regional experts from "Spirit of regions" will be happy to help and plan the trip with the Gleichenberger Bahn in conjunction with a sparkling mineral water tasting, a hike on the Kaskögerlweg in Gnas, or a visit to the exhibition "die kleine Welt der großen Schlösser."
