Pörtschach am Wörthersee, Carinthia
From 1945, Josef Tichy attended the Carinthian Provincial Institute for Fine Arts in Klagenfurt and from 1950, the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. As a freelance artist, he explored various printmaking techniques. He led graphic art seminars and undertook study trips in Europe and the Middle East. His residence was Pörtschach am Wörthersee. He received numerous international awards for his graphics. In 1982, he was awarded the professional title "Professor". The freelance artist was skilled in all techniques; he joyfully experimented with ever new forms and colors, drawing inspiration from his grandchildren's scribbles as well as from the walnut tree in front of his Pörtschach studio, where his grandfather had run a nursery. From the initial portraits and landscapes of his time as a soldier, he eventually created masterpieces of abstraction, which can now be found in important graphic art collections worldwide.
