From the 1970s onwards, Prof. Gerhard Kisser dismantled over 30 buildings from the last three centuries in various Burgenland towns, lovingly rebuilt them, and thus saved them from decay or definitive demolition. Wood, clay, and straw are the traditional materials of the buildings, most of which are now listed as historical monuments. The residential houses, Kellerstöckl (small wine cellars), granaries, barns, workshops, and other buildings house a wealth of rural everyday objects and tools and offer a comprehensive insight into the past rural working and living world of Pannonia. The rustic Stadelschank (barn tavern) provides for physical well-being. Children can enjoy themselves at the playground. In the "Dorfladen" (village shop), one can find culinary delights and handicrafts from the region. As part of the "Summer Academy for the Preservation of Your Personal Cultural Heritage" and the general course offerings, there is an extensive range of courses every year. In 2018, the open-air museum was chosen as the "Most Beautiful Place in Burgenland".
