Fischerkanzel in der Pfarrkirche

Traunkirchen, Upper Austria

FISCHERKANZEL (FISHERMAN'S PULPIT): The famous Fisherman's Pulpit in the current parish church (former monastery church) was carved in 1753 by an unnamed artist. It depicts the miracle of the abundant catch of fish. The apostles James and John in the boat pull up the net filled with fish. In the background stands Christ, and Peter kneels before him. The sounding board of the Fisherman's Pulpit is crowned by the statue of Saint Francis Xavier, the missionary apostle of the Jesuits for India and Japan. Four brown and black figures, representing the Far East, sit at his feet. In front of the saint is a large crab holding a cross in its claw. It is told from the life of Francis Xavier that a ship on which he was traveling was brought into great danger by a storm. To appease the storm, he held his cross into the sea, whereupon it was struck from his hand by a wave. After landing, a large crab returned the cross to the saint.
