The raft trip was very dangerous due to the strong currents and large rock cliffs. In the 16th century, Zillen (flat-bottomed boats) were used instead of rafts, which could transport up to 10 tons downstream. Upstream, the Zillen loaded with food were pulled by horses on their own riverside paths, the so-called Treppelwege (towpaths).Flooding:Again and again, the Enns caused great damage due to flooding. The largest flood occurred in July 1572 when the water flooded the town square and many houses and parts of the city fortifications collapsed. In recent years, there have also been very severe floods (2002).The Enns river is located directly on the Ennskai and can be reached via the Stadtplatz of Steyr.
