Curmuseum Bad Gleichenberg

An interesting insight into the often quite illustrious history of the traditional spa town unfolds in the Curmuseum in the historic drinking fountain. The Bad Gleichenberg Museum Association opened a fascinating exhibition with the Curmuseum on the history and anecdotes surrounding Gleichenberg and its distinguished guests – emperors, archdukes, and noble ladies. Where drinking cures were once held, today the informative Curmuseum is housed. The drinking fountain – the Curmuseum – as part of the former thermal bath, along with the Roman fountain from the 1st century AD, bears witness to the long spa tradition in which the now almost 200-year-old therapeutic experience is rooted. It has been over 180 years, since 1834, that Bad Gleichenberg became a spa town in the Thermal and Volcanic Land Styria. This makes Bad Gleichenberg the oldest spa town in Styria. Only four years later, 120 spa guests were already counted. Most of them were of noble blood, among them Emmerich Prince of Thurn und Taxis, Crown Prince Franz Ferdinand, even Emperor Franz Josef I, and the writer Peter Rosegger. Early in the morning, they went with the other guests for the drinking cure in the spa park and, while strolling and promenading, drank glass after glass of the iron-free Gleichenberg water – always accompanied by the spa orchestra. Finally a museum for Bad Gleichenberg again Due to the shelling by the Red Army on March 31, 1945, the Kurhaus at the upper spa park, including the well-stocked museum, burned down completely. All exhibits and written documents about the history of Bad Gleichenberg were destroyed. Thanks to the commitment of many volunteers – especially Ria Mang – it was possible for Bad Gleichenberg to get its museum back after 67 years.
