Basilika Maria Heimsuchung und Familiengruft der Batthyány

Güssing, Burgenland

The Franciscan monastery houses the family crypt of the Batthyány family. Adam Graf Batthyány established a burial site with the Franciscan monastery under the monastery church, which is still in use today. The crypt is arranged in a cruciform shape under the church and consists of a larger, two-aisled room and a smaller one under the choir. Adjoining these are two further small rooms under the Loreto Chapel and under the sacristy, as well as another room, located somewhat deeper, under the tower. An expansion took place in 1969, so that the crypt now extends under the north wing of the monastery building. There are approximately 100 sarcophagi along with heart urns in the crypt, which, in terms of size, is Austria's second-largest family crypt after the Capuchin or Imperial Crypt in Vienna. The crypt is not publicly accessible, but a visit is possible upon request and with advance registration!
