Weisz'sches Freihaus

Amidst this historic town square ensemble rises the Weiß’sche Freihaus, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. It dates from the second half of the 16th century and bears the name of Christoph Weiß, a wealthy merchant who was closely associated with the later Emperor Matthias. The historical connection between Weiß and Matthias shows how personal relationships and business interests influenced history. Weiß, who had the Weiß’sche Freihaus rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century, left behind not only an architectural legacy but also a remarkable business relationship. He lent the later Emperor Matthias a considerable sum of 100,000 Gulden, an immense amount of money at that time.
