Wallfahrtskirchlein zur Kalten Herberge

St. Jodok-Schmirn-Vals, Tyrol

About half an hour from Schmirn, above the hamlet of Wildlahner, hidden in a forest clearing, lies the pilgrimage church "Mariahilf in der Kalten Herberge". The legend of its origin tells of a shepherd who, on a stormy autumn day, saw a beautiful woman with a child sitting under a large spruce tree. Full of pity, the shepherd called out to her: "You have a cold lodging here!" Then the woman and child disappeared. After some time, people believed they recognized the Mother of God in her. A wooden chapel was built as early as 1730, and it was soon replaced by a brick church. Every year on July 26 (St. Anne's Day) and on the 13th of each month from May to October, penitential processions are made to Kalte Herberge with great participation from the population.
