Author's personal words: As an enthusiastic amateur ornithologist since my youth and a resident of Hof for 37 years, I have particularly observed the birdlife in and around Hof. During these years, 136 different species have been identified. Of these, 63 are confirmed breeding bird species, and an additional 28 species are probable breeders for which proof is still lacking. The remaining species are winter guests or migrants. This is already 15 more species than in 1990, when the Hof Chronicle was printed. This wide spectrum of bird species arises from the fact that Hof has many different habitats: forests, mountains, the lake, the moor, and settlements. The Eurasian Magpie, for example, is such a bird for which no breeding has yet been proven in Hof. Although a common bird in the lowlands, the Eurasian Magpie has only been continuously observed in Hof since 1993.
