Villa Rustica in Löffelbach

Hartberg-Umgebung, Styria

burgführung

A journey into the past. In the midst of the East Styrian hill country, you will find the Villa Rustica in Löffelbach. These ruins of an ancient Roman villa are evidence of one of the largest verifiable Roman estate farms in Styria. The estate was inhabited from the 2nd to the 4th century and hints at the luxury of those times. The associated farm buildings no longer exist, and the hill grave of the landowner's family was leveled in 1770. The Villa Rustica itself has been preserved in its 4th-century construction form; the Roman manor was definitively abandoned a century later, in the 5th century AD. The layout of the villa indicates that it belonged to the type of peristyle villas with portico, meaning a villa with an interior courtyard surrounded by a colonnade and a gallery entrance. Many of the rooms were originally decorated with colorful wall paintings and even equipped with an ancient form of underfloor heating. Water supply was already advanced at the time, as was waste disposal. A true luxury building from Roman times, now freely accessible in Löffelbach.
