The Griffen Stalactite Cave in Carinthia is located in the mighty limestone rock of the Schlossberg in the center of Griffen. It was discovered towards the end of World War II and opened to visitors in 1956. As early as 1957, its impressive stalactites and stalagmites were declared a natural monument. Significant finds include bones of long-extinct animals such as cave bears, woolly rhinoceroses, and giant deer, as well as tools and fire pits from the Stone Age. These discoveries prove that the area around the cave is one of the oldest human settlement areas in Carinthia. The Schlossberg also contains the remains of a historic refuge castle. From May to October, the Griffen Stalactite Cave is open daily and is considered the most colorful show cave in Austria. The constant 8 °C inside provides a pleasant cooling even on hot summer days, making the cave a popular excursion destination for families, nature lovers, and vacationers in Carinthia. Tip: Sturdy shoes and warm clothing are recommended for the visit.
