Tassilo-Quelltempel

The neoclassical spring house looks back on a long history: Already used in prehistoric times and known as a salt spring since the era of the Illyrians, Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria gifted it to Kremsmünster Abbey in 777. Originally used for salt extraction and to alleviate skin ailments and goiter diseases, Matthias Steppich and Alois Urlaub recognized the medical potential of the spring starting in 1827. We owe today's spring temple to the Viennese merchant Maria Selig, who had it endowed in 1841 out of gratitude for the healing of her daughter. Finds of Roman coins from the time of Emperor Antoninus Pius prove that the site was already important in antiquity. In 2023, the spring temple was restored and is currently available for extraordinary events.
